Indian cinema is a collection of interconnected film cultures, shaped by different languages, regions and audiences. Aravindan’s Malayalam debut Uttarayanam, both from 1975, belong to the parallel history of socially engaged and artistically exploratory cinema. For this timeline, “a defining blockbuster era” is more accurate than claiming that the pan-Indian blockbuster was born in 1975. The landmark here is the lasting influence of films such as Sholay, not an absolute first for cinema reaching across regional audiences.
